During their time at Kirkley Middle School, pupils will follow a programme of study designed to develop their skills in the 3 key areas of performance, composition and appraisal with these being underpinned by the development of technical musical theory and a musical vocabulary.

In performance, all students will learn to sing and play instruments including keyboards, guitars, drums, and timed and un-timed percussion. Some may also receive tuition on woodwind or brass instruments.

In composition and appraisal, students will be encouraged to compose in various styles and have them assessed by the teacher and the class as well as self-assessment.

We will use music from around the world (by geographical location), and of different styles (classical, rock'n'roll, reggae, rap and so on) to demonstrate our skills.

Some students may have the chance to perform for a wider audience at venues such as Snape and the Marina Theatre.
